Henderson Library – located in the heart of the Georgia Southern University campus – was designed to link the old with the new. The original 132,000 sq. ft. facility was a four-story precast concrete box designed in the Brutalism style and was incongruous with the Georgia Southern campus motif. Project goals were to develop a building that was architecturally more compatible with its surroundings and to address the needs of a 21st century academic library. The structure was expanded by 103,000 square feet, which included encapsulating and renovating the original four-story building. One of the unique features of this new facility is the high density automated storage/retrieval system to allow for improved material control.
The project was featured in the American Libraries Spring 2009 Design Showcase.
