About the Project

Initially constructed in 1973, the library could no longer accommodate Coastal Georgia’s growing student body. As part of this assignment, the building footprint was increased by 3,025 SF while the original, 24,500 SF structure underwent alterations throughout. The extensive work required a detailed phasing plan to enable the library to remain operational throughout the construction.

Designed with the modern learner in mind, the primary objectives were to update the library interiors while providing a more flexible layout that supports various types and sizes of collaborative spaces, which faculty and students can utilize for projects and study groups. The addition and alterations include a learning commons, study rooms, and a large conference room in addition to other updates such as provisions for quiet spaces and a centralized help desk. The expanded library houses a writing center as well as space for student tutoring – The ATTIC (the Academic Tutoring Instruction Center). New technology equipment was added, including three-dimensional printers and virtual reality software, along with additional areas for students to collaborate.

The renovated library supports the college’s mission of achieving outstanding educational excellence and fostering student engagement, thereby promoting student success.
